* Traineeship for young professionnals/graduates:

Hilary Patroba, a Kenyan National with a master in Economics from the University of Nairobi, joined the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) for a six-month traineeship as a Research Assistant for the Economic and Trade Cooperation Programme

This internship took place from Januari 2011 to July 2011 and will be followed by another 6 months traineeship the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Pretoria, South Africa.

These traineeships, sponsored by the South-North Network (SN2), as part of the TDNet Inititative financed under the Edulink programme.

"ECDPM offers fantastic opportunity to nurture skills"

While at ECDPM I was able to better understand policy processes, frameworks, instruments and institutions that underline relations between Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of countries and the EU including their benefits, challenges and opportunities they create towards promoting economic development in developing countries. The processes include aid for trade, Doha round of negotiations, Generalised Systems of Preference and rules of origin, Economic Partnership Agreements, raw material initiatives, business facilitation and opinions and activities of emerging players in ACP, to mention a few. Attending and participating at policy dialogues and reading policy relevant documents enhanced this.

As part of my work at ECDPM, I was involved in discussion paper content development and disseminating information on emerging players activities in ACP countries, the place of EU relations.

Takesh (Kavi) Luckho, a Mauritian National, was selected for a six-month traineeship as a Research Assistant in the Economic and Trade Cooperation Programme (ETC) at the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM), Maastricht, The Netherlands. The traineeship, sponsored by the South-North Network (SN2), as part of the TDNet Inititative financed under the Edulink programme, took place from 14 January to 14 July 2010.

''I believe that these six months at ECDPM have been a real blessing for me. I was able to understand the various constraints faced by many academics or policy-makers to bring their ideas to the practical world, identified some ways to avoid these problems and have also become more familiar with the state of play of current ACP-EU EPA negotiations. I think that the traineeship has helped me to grow – intellectually, personally and socially, and contributed some significant steps forward on my quest to become an accomplished researcher.''

'The main purpose of this traineeship was to offer a limited number of university graduates/young professionals the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the activities/networks of a policy broker like ECDPM’s, and to expose them to the “secrets” of decision making in practice.

During my time at ECDPM, I contributed to a number of cross-cutting projects such as:

* the preparation of background documents for the “Joining up Africa: Support to Regional Integration” meeting held on 3-4 March 2010 in London,

* the ECDPM “Fiscal Study on the Impact of EPAs”.

I also provided some help during the editing phase of the ECDPM Aid for Trade and Agriculture series issue on the “Caribbean Rum Programme”. In addition, I was closely involved in the day-to-day operations of the acp-eu-trade.org website, library and the revamping of the SN2 web pages. I was also one of the editors of the acp-eu-trade.org monthly newsletter (January 2010 Issue no. 35 till June 2010 Issue no.40), with occasional help on the ECDPM/ICTSD Trade Negotiations Insights (TNI) monthly publication.''

* Traineeship for young professionnals/graduates:

After a 6 months internship at the Southern Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Fantu Farris Mulleta, an Ethiopian National, joined the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) for a 6 months traineeship as a Research Assistant in the Economic and Trade Cooperation Programme (ETC). The traineeship, sponsored by the South-North Network (SN2), as part of the TDNet Inititative financed under the Edulink programme, took place from 6 July 2009 to 6 January 2010.

''My stay at ECDPM was greatly fruitful. During the six months I spent at ECDPM, I had a very close exposure to policy analysis and policy oriented research.

Particularly, I had the opportunity to attend conferences and debates on some topical policy issues, including Aid for Trade, development support and impacts of trade liberalization in the context of EPAs.

My stay at ECDPM has also given me the opportunity to work with and learn from proficient policy researchers which I believe is an asset for young professionals like me.

In general, the traineeship has greatly helped me in boosting my research and communication, organizational as well as interpersonal skills.

During my six months stay at ECDPM, I was able to take part in different activities including:

* Preparation and dissemination of the acp-eu-trade.org monthly newsletter, * Maintenance and updating of the different web pages under the acp-eu-trade.org website

* Background research for a project on EC’s response to West Africa EPA Development Programme (PAPED)

* A successful example of capacity development with the involvment of three different SN2 members !
Mr. Mulugeta Belayhun Belete, an Ethiopian national, was accepted to the University of Pavia's PhD Programme in Economics. Mulugeta did his undergraduate studies at the Addis Ababa University (AAU), and then completed the Master Program in Cooperation & International Economic Integration at the University of Pavia, with a 6-month on-the-job training at ECDPM in Maastricht (under the SN2 Fellowship Scheme). He is currently working at AAU, teaching undergraduate courses in economics, and will soon be joining Pavia for the PhD.

* Another positive step, thanks to the relations established through the SN2!
An Italian student, also accepted in Pavia's PhD Programme in Economics, is currently working for the Italian Development Cooperation in Maputo and has been our point of reference for relations with Mondlane University, which may be joining the SN2 Network in the near future.

* A Phd student of the University of Mauritius, also a member of the Network, will be supervised for his dissertation by one of the lecturers of the Master Program in Cooperation & International Economic Integration at Pavia.

In order to continue producing such results and to strengthen collaborations between partners, the SN2 needs external funding. Therefore, SN2 members are preparing a joint submission for the next call for proposals by EDULINK.
